Phlebotomist

Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting patient specimens using proper collection techniques while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and accurate specimen identification. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and capable of managing multiple priorities while providing excellent patient care and customer service.

Experience with an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is preferred. Experience with Epic is a plus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and hazardous or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all department and hospital policies related to infection prevention, safety, personnel, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collect specimens from adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients using proper collection techniques.
  • Accurately label all specimens with the patient's name, date, time, and collector initials.
  • Collect and document urine drug screens requiring chain of custody and perform breath alcohol testing as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory work areas, stock supplies, and order inventory as needed.
  • Instruct patients on proper specimen collection procedures.
  • Prepare reference specimens for transport according to established procedures.
  • Answer telephone calls, assist patients and clients, record messages, and file reports.
  • Organize and prioritize workload to accommodate both STAT and routine testing requests during periods of high volume.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, sound judgment, and professionalism when handling situations not addressed by established policies. Resolve issues when appropriate and report unusual occurrences to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
