Surgical Technologist (PRN)
Position Summary
The Surgical Technologist (PRN) assists in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are integral members of the operating room team, which typically includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Operative Responsibilities
Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment and verify proper functioning.
Transport patients to the operating room and assist with positioning on the operating table.
Apply sterile drapes and assist the surgical team with donning sterile gowns and gloves.
Intra-Operative Responsibilities
Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants.
Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to maintain workflow and efficiency.
Hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist with sponge, needle, supply, and instrument counts.
Prepare, handle, and properly dispose of specimens for laboratory analysis.
Assist with applying dressings and wound care as directed.
Post-Operative Responsibilities
Assist in transferring patients to the recovery area.
Clean, restock, and prepare the operating room for subsequent procedures.
Operate decontamination equipment, sterilizers, suction machines, surgical lights, and diagnostic equipment as needed.
Perform sterile processing of instruments and equipment in accordance with established protocols.
Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred or required per state regulations.
Current BLS certification required.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining sterile technique.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond effectively in high-pressure situations.
